Top surfing beaches in Britain revealed as autumn swells arrive

New research highlights the British beaches attracting the strongest praise from surfers, with Cornwall and Devon dominating the results.

As Summer crowds begin to thin and Autumn swells start rolling towards the British coastline, new research has revealed some of the country’s most popular beaches for surfing.

The study analysed hundreds of coastal locations listed by Surf Forecast alongside thousands of Tripadvisor reviews to identify the beaches receiving the strongest positive feedback from surfers.

And there is one clear winner geographically: the South West.

Cornwall and Devon dominate the final rankings, with all five of the highest-ranked qualifying beaches located along the two counties’ Atlantic-facing coastline.

At the head of the list is Fistral Beach in North Cornwall, which recorded an impressive 717 five-star Tripadvisor reviews mentioning surfing. The famous Newquay beach has long been closely associated with British surf culture, and the figures suggest its reputation continues to translate into enthusiastic visitor reviews.

In second place is our very own Woolacombe Beach, with 440 five-star surfing-related reviews, while Perranporth, another North Cornwall favourite, places third with 264.

Polzeath, in North Cornwall, and Croyde, in North Devon, complete the five beaches highlighted in the final ranking.

The research looked beyond review numbers alone. Data was compiled for 469 beaches listed by Surf Forecast, including information about each location, its type and its official Surf Forecast surf rating. To qualify for the final ranking, beaches were required to have a Surf Forecast rating of four stars or above.

Tripadvisor reviews were then analysed to identify five-star feedback specifically mentioning surfing and related terms, providing an indication of which qualifying beaches have made the strongest impression on people visiting them to get in the water.

Cornwall and Devon lead Britain's surfing scene

The results underline just how concentrated Britain's most popular surfing destinations are along the South West coast.

North Cornwall accounts for three of the five highlighted beaches: Fistral, Perranporth and Polzeath, while Woolacombe and Croyde fly the flag for North Devon.

The two counties benefit from long stretches of Atlantic-facing coastline and an established surfing culture that has grown around everything from major surf beaches to smaller coves, reefs and point breaks.

For visitors, that can also mean greater choice when planning an autumn holiday, whether the priority is learning to surf, finding a familiar beach break or exploring a stretch of coastline with several surfing locations within easy reach.

Why Autumn can be one of the best times for a surfing break

Although British beaches are commonly associated with Summer Holidays, Autumn can offer a different appeal for surfers.

The peak Summer season has passed, beaches can feel less crowded and Atlantic weather systems can bring stronger and more consistent swells. Early Autumn also retains enough daylight to make weekend and short break trips practical before the shortest days of Winter arrive.

That combination is helping to make October increasingly appealing to people who want to make surfing the focus of a coastal break rather than simply an activity added to a traditional Summer beach holiday.

Kevin Darvill,  Sales & Marketing Director at Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks said:

“North Devon has always been one of the best spots for surfing in Britain and Woolacombe is a great beach for both beginners and more experienced surfers alike; one of the big draws of our Parks is the proximity to the beach and with the weather in starting to stay warmer later in the year, October and the Autumn in general are becoming increasingly attractive for surfing breaks. It’s also the peak time of year to go if you are looking for surf quality.”

Methodology

Data was compiled from 469 beaches listed on Surf Forecast, including each beach’s location, type and surf rating (Surf Forecast’s official 5* rating guide based on local reviews and all available surf data sources used on the site).

This was used to find the most prominent surfing beaches for a Tripadvisor data analysis that focused specifically on five-star reviews containing the term “surfing” and other relevant modifiers to identify positive feedback from surfers.
